For parents new to Dutch school
Dutch school terms, explained
Klimbo is for children in groep 7 and 8 at a Dutch primary school. Your child practises in Dutch; you follow along in English. These are the school terms you will come across, in a few lines each.
Your child practises in Dutch
Klimbo follows the Dutch primary school curriculum. The questions, explanations and hints your child sees are in Dutch, just as at school. The pages for you as a parent are in English.
Groep 7 and 8
The last two years of Dutch primary school (basisschool), for children of about 10 to 12. Klimbo practises the maths, spelling and reading of these two years.
1F, 1S and 2F
The Dutch reference levels for language and maths. 1F is the basic level every child should reach by the end of primary school. The higher target is 1S for maths and 2F for language and reading. Klimbo uses these levels as a guide for the practice, never as a grade or a prediction.
Reading comprehension (begrijpend lezen)
A school subject of its own in the Netherlands: reading a text and answering questions about what it says and what it means.
Spelling and grammar (taalverzorging)
Dutch spelling, including the spelling of verbs (werkwoordspelling), capitals and punctuation, and naming the parts of a sentence.
The doorstroomtoets and the schooladvies
In groep 8, every child takes a national test, the doorstroomtoets. Together with the teacher's judgement it feeds into the advice for secondary school (the schooladvies). Klimbo does not predict that test and gives no school advice: it shows where practice starts and what comes next.
Your child's map (the Klimkaart)
In the app your child sees their practice as a map, called the Klimkaart: what is solid, what they are working on and what comes next. On these pages we call it your child's map.
What you see in Klimbo is a starting point for practice, not a school advice or a test result.
